Dominic Law is a Hong Kong double bassist whose work moves between orchestral performance, chamber music and a wider curiosity about repertoire and musical ideas. Shaped by nearly a decade in New York and performances across the United States, Europe and Asia, his approach brings together the traditions of orchestral playing with an interest in collaboration, historical perspective and new ways of hearing familiar and unfamiliar music.
About Dominic
Juilliard-trained double bassist Dr. Dominic Law has performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra as Guest Principal Bass and has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Law has also performed with numerous New York City ensembles, including the American Composers Orchestra, New York Classical Players, New York Pops, Experiential Orchestra, NOVUS, String Orchestra of New York City, and Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players.
Dr. Law has performed in Kuhmo, Budapest, Weimar, and Berlin with Musicus Soloists Hong Kong (MSHK). He is also a founding core member of Away From Keyboard (AFK), a contemporary chamber collective in New York City that incorporates play structures and game mechanics into its performances.
Dr. Law holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School, where he also completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his time at Juilliard, he served as a teaching fellow in the Music Theory and Music History departments, as well as in Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program. His principal teachers include Joseph Conyers, Timothy Cobb, Harold Robinson, and Rex Surany on double bass; Doug Balliett on Baroque bass; and Sarah Cunningham on viola da gamba. Dr. Law has received grants and awards from the Bei Shan Tang Foundation, the Irene Diamond Graduate Fund, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, and the Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund.
